So-Ha Au is interested in researching the themes of mapping memories and the layering of time. This has taken the form of paintings, drawings, prints and quilts.
She has used diagrams or symbols, such as floor-plans, mazes and genealogy trees; to look at the context of time, and to suggest another voice within the telling of 'his-story'. Using the 'family tree' to juxtapose what is at once, universal and intimate; familiar and anonymous. Also, time lines which cannot only reveal connections between people, but also the impossibility of full knowledge, and therefore absence and loss.
She has pushed further the 'motif' used in the genealogy works, which are diagrams of dressmaking patterns; to look at the interior space occupied by the clothed body. Deconstructing the shapes, like displaced limbs. Reconstructing them again, almost as ‘flat plans’ for referencing an unoccupied, internal space of the absent and displaced.
